A NEW Tesco Express store in Rainworth which opens this week received 350 applications for just 24 jobs - more than 14 for each vacancy.

But the huge wave of interest has allowed the firm to ensure all jobs have gone to people from the local area.

The new store, at the site of the old Robin Hood pub in Southwell Road East opens on at 8am on Friday.

Deputy manager Emily Holden and her team promoted the jobs at the local Job Centre Plus .

Emily said: “I was thrilled by the response we received to our recruitment drive.

“In this time of economic uncertainty, it is great that we are able to create jobs for our local community and help get people back into work.

“I am really pleased with my new team and I’m looking forward to working with them.

“We look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”

The store will celebrate its launch with donations to the Cornwater Club and Detached Youth Project.

Dr Peter Rose, chairman of the Cornwater Club and Claire Dady, chief executive of the Detached Youth Project, will cut the ribbon at the store official opening ceremony at 10.30am.

Store manager, Hollie Whitehead and her team will present Claire and Peter each with a cheque for £250 as part of its commitment to supporting the local community.

The Cornwater club provides lunch and activities for the elderly community, enabling them to socialise and avoid isolation.

The Detached Youth Project works with young people in the area to change lives and improve life chances by encouraging responsibility and achievement.

Hollie said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Cornwater Club and Detached Youth Project, as they both do such wonderful work for the local community.

“We are really pleased that Claire and Peter are coming to launch the new store and join in the celebrations with us.

“My team and I are looking forward to welcoming our customers into the new store and we hope that Tesco will become a key part of the local community.”

Store opening hours will be seven days a week from 6am until 11pm, and will have a free cash machine, self-service tills, mobile phone top-up facility, National Lottery counter, bakery, beers, wines and spirits. Parking is also available to customers in front of the store.
