We want to put all the unsung groups that represent the beating hearts of our communities in the spotlight.
The latest organisation to come under the GrassRoots Spotlight is....Sutton in Ashfield Choral Society.
Tell us about your group...
Sutton in Ashfield Choral Society is a fun choir that sings music from stage and screen, popular songs, light classical music and Christmas songs. We also perform a number of songs and arrangements composed specially for them.
How many members are there in your group?
We have about 35-40 members.
How long has your group been running and who was it launched by?
The choir began in the early 1960s as an evening class and has been performing concerts for over 50 years. It has had a number of conductors over the years with Robert Steadman taking over in 2013.
What do you offer your members and what activities do you get up to?
We rehearse weekly on a Monday, 7pm - 9pm, at St. John’s Methodist Church in Sutton in Ashfield. We do a number of concerts each year including the Christmas concerts (two performances), a concert with a local brass band in April and a summer concert. Alongside this the choir gives less formal concerts for other local organisations, we join with others for community carols, and even sang at Lincoln Cathedral in January 2016 as part of a charity concert.
Age of oldest member and youngest members? Family ties etc...
We have a wide age range which has stretched from 18 up to 90 over the past year. We welcome anyone who wants to sing in a choir, but especially younger members.
Does your group have any claims to fame/funny stories, or has it had any famous members?
Singing at Lincoln Cathedral in January was very special - it was a concert to raise money for Syrian Refugees. Last year we also sand with the Musicality Singers from Worksop in a concert that featured new versions of the songs from Alice in Wonderland to mark the 150th anniversary of the book being published.
