LETTER: Jacksdale book goes on sale

Jacksdale Area Culture and Heritage Group (JACH’s) is delighted to announce the launch of is new full colour, illustrated book ‘Their Tomorrow For Our Today.’ Made possible by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The book is the culmination of five years of extensive research which includes numerous contributions from villagers who have joined forces to share photographs, documents and to recount their memories.

We have left no stone unturned, transcribing many local newspaper accounts from over the decades and poring over parish records to pull together a richly interesting jigsaw puzzle of village life in Jacksdale and Westwood from just before the First World War right up to the present day.

The central focus of the book is the village war memorial on which so many local family names are etched. Chapters include: streets, houses and occupants, the role of the church, education for all, war in the workplace, women to the fore, casualties and survivors of WW1, the story of the Jacksdale war memorial, the British Legion, the World War Two years and a changing landscape.

The new book will be launched during a heritage weekend at Jacksdale Community Centre which coincides with Armistice weekend, Saturday, November 7 and Sunday November 8, 10.30am to 4pm both days.

The 390-page A4 full-colour book will retail at the subsidised price of £10 per copy. A Royal British Legion service of remembrance will take place at the Jacksdale War Memorial on Sunday November 8 at 10.45am and at Ironville Memorial at 10.15am.
