King John is coming to life

The free event on Saturday and Sunday will see re-enactment group Regia Anglorum create a living history camp for visitors to explore.

Arena displays featuring battles and skirmishes will also feature in the show presented by community heritage group, The Friends of Thynghowe, and the Forestry Commission.

They say visitors will find themselves walking into the year 1214 when King John visited Nottinghamshire to stay at his hunting palace.

Will the local Barons accept his new laws and taxes or will they refuse to pay and be outlawed?

History suggests that the events and acts of cruelty that took place in the county during the period began a revolt that culminated in the signing of the Magna Carta.

Lynda Mallett, of the Friends of Thynghowe, said: “The Viking Spring Thing last year was a success, with families and historical enthusiasts alike enjoying their glimpse into the region’s past, and we aim to build on that this year.”

Forestry Commission community ranger, Amy Chandler, said: “The historical and natural heritage that is being showcased, as well as the living history displays, make this an event not to be missed.”
