A NEW Tesco Express store in Huthwaite has provided a welcome boost to job seekers in Ashfield after 17 people landed employment with the company.
Tesco bosses worked in conjunction with Sutton’s Job Centre to recruit people from the Ashfield area to work at the new Chesterfield Road store.
This recruitment drive, along with a ‘word of mouth’ campaign to drum up interest, led to all the positions being filled - with 15 out of 17 being given to people who were previously unemployed.
Store Manager Simon Cawar said: “I was thrilled by the response we received to our recruitment drive.
“In this time of economic uncertainty, it is great that we are able to create jobs for our local community and help get people back into work.
“I am really pleased with my new team and I’m looking forward to working with my new staff.
“We are delighted to be opening a Tesco Express store on Chesterfield Road, and look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”
Around 400 people applied for the 17 jobs at the new store and 80 interviews were conducted before the posts were offered.
Meanwhile, work on the new Tesco Express and car park at the former Workpeople’s Inn began in April.
Bosses behind the scheme said that the project would bring the former pub, which had fallen into a state of disrepair, back into ‘live use.’
Planning rules mean Tesco did not need planning permission to transform the pub into a food store because of its previous use.
