A Huthwaite man escaped a custodial sentence after he attacked his 12-year-old stepson with a stick.

The 39-year-old, who can not be named for legal reasons, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 23rd May.

The court was told how the man had ordered his step son to clean his shoes on Christmas Day last year, and flew into a rage when he refused.

The man threw the shoes at him, hitting him in the face, punched him in the stomach several times before grabbing a stick and hitting him with it.

The youngster suffered bruises to several parts of his body, including torso, thigh, knee and buttocks.

Defending, Simon Greaves, said his client was ‘utterly ashamed of his actions’ and that social services had since intervened and the family were now trying to ‘build bridges’. The man was given a 26 week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months and made to pay £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
