FOUR fire crews spent five hours battling a grass and undergrowth fire at Rufford Colliery last night.
The 1,000 square metre blaze started around 6.30pm and it took 20 firemen from Mansfield, Blidworth and Ashfield until 11.30pm to put it out.
An Ashfield fire crew manager said the dry weather made the grassland very hard to extinguish. He added: “This has happened through someone’s carelessness or inconsiderate lighting of fires. It is close to a wildlife area and the impact on the environment could be bad in the long run. With four pumps tied up in the area this meant we had limited life cover in other areas.”
