The manageress of a newly-refurbished pub in Kirkby says that a recruitment drive has generated a huge amount of interest in the community.

Donna Clay, who is the new manageress of the Kingsway pub, says that she received ‘thousands’ of calls about the 20 new positions created at the pub, which opens on Wednesday.

“I have had thousands of calls - I have had people phoning me at 6am,” said Donna.

“We had to narrow it down to people who had experience in the trade and we have got a good mix.”

The pub, which is owned by Star Pubs and Bars, has stood empty for around 18 months and has suffered attacked by vandals.

Now it has been refurbished, Donna, who has managed pubs in Nottinghamshire for the past seven years and has been in the hospitality trade since she was 16, says that she hopes it will become a popular family venue.

“It’s undergone an amazing transformation,” she said.

It’s a family-orientated pub. It’s somewhere people can have a nice, affordable meal. It’s good quality, family food.”

She also says that people in the area have told her that they are looking forward to seeing the pub reopen.

She said: “They want a good pub in the community - they feel like they have missed out.

“It’s a lot different (to how the pub was before). It will be a lot more food-based.”

• The pub will open at noon on Wednesday.
