Homecoming man’s country calender

A Kirkby man has published a calender with photos of the town’s surrounding countryside which he hopes will inspire people to experience it for themselves.

Russell Deakin (52), of Willow Avenue, said he had been moved to document the area’s beauty upon his return after 25 years living in London.

“I think Kirkby is surrounded by some fantastic scenery,” said Russell.” “Maybe not picture-postcard stuff, but beautiful all the same.

“And I am greatly saddened by the prospect of the Mowlands development possibly going ahead to build 1800 houses on the western and oldest side of our town.

“I also think it a shame that more people from the area do not experience, and in some cases are not even aware of some of the fantastic walks along the many bridleways and public footpaths that surround us.”

The calender recreates one of Russell’s favourite walks on the west side of Kirkby.

It starts on Doles Lane and goes down into the ancient dumbles woodland continuing through farmland and onto Boar Hill and back to St Wilfrid’s Church.

The calender includes a map on the back which shows where each photo was taken.

Said Russell: “I am just trying to influence a bit of curiosity in people about the area.”

Russell’s diary is on sale for £6 and you can order a copy by emailing [email protected] or phoning him on 07899 236302.
