MANSFIELD’S Olympic and Paralympic heroes will be honoured at a homecoming event in the town centre next month.

Residents are being invited to celebrate the achievements of swimmer Rebecca Adlington, who won two Olympic bronze medals at London 2012, as well as Charlotte Henshaw, Sam Hynd and Oliver Hynd who will compete in the Paralympics.

Team GB Olympic badminton player Chris Adcock, who grew up in Ravenshead, has also been invited to attend the event on 11th September.

The homecoming will get underway in Market Place from around 6pm, when the athletes will take to the stage while a big screen shows each of them competing in London.

There will be Olympic-themed activities to keep the crowds entertained and 1,000 flags will be given out.

Sports teams and clubs will also be invited to attend a sports village, where people who have been motivated to get into sport can find out how they can get involved.

Council chiefs say further details will be released within the next few weeks.

Mansfield mayor Tony Egginton said: “This homecoming event provides the ideal opportunity for everyone from the District and the surrounding area to come together to celebrate the achievements of our local Olympic and Paralympic athletes and show our pride and our appreciation for all their hard work and dedication.”
