A CHARITY which has supported more than 2,000 struggling families from across Ashfield is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Home Start Ashfield, which is based on Percival Crescent in Sutton, has given the kind of help often provided by friends and family members which many of us take for granted.
Vice-chairman Denise Helliwell, who has been a volunteer with the charity for the past three years, says: “It helps families who are under stress before they get to the point where there is a major problem.”
The charity, which has helped 2,200 families, pairs up parent volunteers with families who have children under five-years-old and each volunteer helps with tasks such as playing with the children, shopping or making a doctor’s appointment.
The key aim of the charity, which is currently helping 28 families in Ashfield, is to enable people to do things for themselves, for example cooking, as well as provide days out, a Christmas party, residential trips and other get-togethers.
Liz Sheldon, who is senior organiser at Home Start Ashfield, said: “We went to the Robin Hood Festival. Some families won’t get out of Ashfield during the school holidays so it’s important to put things on.”
To celebrate its 25th anniversary Home Start is inviting anyone who has been involved over the years to a reunion party on 15th February at a venue to be confirmed. The event will include a memory display board, music, talent and sketches.
