Go back to school as a Green champion, urges Veolia Environmental Services

Veolia Environmental Services Nottinghamshire (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste management contractor) is challenging Notts school pupils to have their greenest ever start to the new term.

Kevin Parker, Communications Manager at Veolia Environmental Services, said: “So much is thrown away that could be reused. Extending the life of your school uniform is just one of the ways you can make a difference.”

Coun Richard Butler, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Environment Committee, said: “We are very proud of the recycling levels we’ve achieved in Nottinghamshire so far and we’re hoping the work we do with Veolia Environmental Services will help to encourage a generation of Green Champions so that we can boost recycling levels even further in the future.”

Here are some top tips to help you on your way:

Make sure kids recycle packed lunch waste such as drinks cans, plastic bottles and compost fruit peel or cores. Kids: if you can’t do this at school, put it back in your empty lunch box and take it home to recycle. The Schools Waste Action Club can offer guidance on creating a ‘Waste free packed lunch’ Ask your teacher for more information. www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/swac

Nominate a family member to be a ‘recycling champion’ for your family. This person will be in charge of ensuring the family are ‘green’ both at home and school

Treat kids to a smart new lunchbox: this is re-useable and is far better than using foil or cling film

Kids grow at the rate of knots, so when last year’s school uniform no longer fits, don’t just throw it away. Pass them to younger siblings or take them to a local charity shop. Many of the counties schools run a ‘swap shop’ style day before term begins. Contact yours to see how you could join in, or set one up for your school!

Choose recycled stationery like pencils made out of recycled plastic cups or even pencil cases made out of recycled tyres!

And don’t forget…when using paper make sure you use both sides!
