WORK is set to begin on Mansfield’s £7.2m new bus station next month after the Government gave final approval for the scheme today (Friday).
Nottinghamshire County Council received the news this morning and will work in partnership with Mansfield District Council to replace the current eyesore facility with a gleaming new interchange at the Station Road car park.
The councils, along with Mansfield MP Alan Meale, bus operators and business leaders have been lobbying the Government for approval since July.
The station, which will be integrated with the train station, is now expected to open in early 2013.
Mansfield mayor Tony Egginton said: “I am delighted that the Government has recognised the importance of the new bus station scheme to the future regeneration and prosperity of Mansfield town centre.”
