If you love your football put perhaps haven’t laced up your boots for a while, then the Football Association’s Just Play programme might be just what you need - and it’s coming to Newark and Sherwood!
FA Just Play Centres are happening across the country and the Grove Leisure Centre in Balderton and the Dukeries Leisure Centre in Ollerton have secured funding to deliver them at their sites, starting on 15th July.
The programme, a partnership between the FA and MARS, aims to arrest the decline in adult football. The partnership is aiming to get 150,000 new participants playing the game for at least 30 minutes a week by September 2013, and deliver a total of 3.9m hours of extra football played each year throughout England. The programme is designed to inspire adults to play regular, accessible football in any form, no matter what their level of experience and ability.
The Grove and Dukeries leisure centres are two of more than 100 Just Play centres the FA is trying to install across England. Each centre will be staffed by FA MARS Just Play Coordinators, delivering casual football sessions that can benefit up to 50 participants at any one time.
Newark and Sherwood District Council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, Cllr Roger Jackson, said: “We’re delighted to have been chosen as part of the Just Play scheme. What better way to keep your fitness in check and in touch with your mates than by enjoying a fun game of football during the closed season?
“It’s all about playing football, with a little bit of skills work included. You don’t have to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo or Wayne Rooney to take part, just enjoy playing the game. It’s also a great way to get fit and perhaps lose a bit of weight, whilst rediscovering those silky skills.”
The sessions will all take place indoors and all equipment will be provided. Participants must just wear suitable clothing and footwear and bring along a drink.
Sessions at the Grove Leisure Centre will be from 8.15pm to 9.15pm, and at the Dukeries Leisure Centre from 7pm to 8pm, costing £2.50 per session for males aged 16 and above. Anyone who is part of the council’s leisure subscription scheme, Activo, can attend the sessions for free.
