Get composting this autumn

It’s now the time of year when many people will be getting ready to tidy up their garden to prepare it for the cold season ahead.

Derbyshire County Council is urging gardeners not to burn organic garden rubbish or throw it away but to compost it ready for spring planting.

Coun John Allsop, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for technology and recycling, said: “For those who don’t already compost at home there’s never been a better time to get started.

“Our record wet summer has encouraged plant growth and created an abundance of garden prunings, spent bedding plants and grass cuttings.

“All of these, plus autumn leaves, could be used over the coming months to produce a nutrient-rich free supply of compost.”

Coun Allsop added: “For those people who don’t compost already we are currently offering compost bins at very reasonable prices.”

Compost bins cost as little as £16, plus £5.49 delivery per order.

They are supplied by Straight plc.
