Slimming World head office staff have spring cleaned their closets and bagged up all the clothes, shoes and accessories they no longer use to donate them to charity in support of the company’s nationwide fundraising campaign The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw.
Around 250 staff, managers and directors at Slimming World’s head office in Somercotes collected approximately 100 bags worth around £3,000 to donate to the local Cancer Research UK shop in Sutton.
The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is a nationwide fundraising drive that invites Slimming World members across the UK to donate the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to charity. Each year Slimming World, the UK’s biggest weight-loss organisation, supports a nominated charity through its fundraising arm SMILES (Slimmers Making it a Little Easier for Someone). Cancer Research UK is Slimming World’s charity partner for 2013 and each bag of clothes collected could raise up to £30.
Ted Hibbert, security officer for Slimming World head office is currently receiving treatment for prostate cancer and was personally touched by the efforts of his colleagues and the whole company. He says: “It’s amazing to think that everyone at Slimming World has embraced The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw to donate to Cancer Research UK. Cancer touches so many people’s lives, whether it’s themselves, relatives or friends. The money their donated clothes raise will make a huge difference to research that helps to find new treatments and long term cure to fight cancer.”
Slimming World’s Marketing co-ordinator, Johanna Mather who has organised the national and Head Office fundraising drive, says: “Our Slimming World Head Office staff embraced the event and jumped at the chance to recycle their old tops, dresses, trousers, skirts and more.
“One in three of us is affected by cancer and being overweight increases our risk of developing the disease so we’re determined to do anything we can do to help fight cancer and help people lead healthier lives. Members and consultants at Slimming World groups across the UK have thrown themselves into this fundraising campaign which is on track to be one of our most successful fundraising efforts ever. Our members are happy to give their unwanted clothes away because they know that they’re never going to need them again!
Our Food Optimising plan isn’t a diet that members follow for a little while and then ‘come off’ when they’ve reached their target weight. At group each week we support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life so they really do slim for good and I’m delighted that our Head Office staff have been so behind the drive too!”
