A historic church has been left counting the cost after its tower was damaged by freak weather.
Two pinnacles on top of St Michael and All Angels Church in South Normanton were blown off during strong winds earlier this month.
The church has launched a fundraising plea to fix the pinnacles as part of a wider appeal to raise £70,000 for other repairs to the tower.
One of the pinnacles crashed through the roof while another landed on a footpath outside the 900-year-old church.
Rev Stephen Potter said: “It was all very dramatic and it’s a miracle nobody was injured.
“Now we need to repair the pinnacles and that’s on top of other essential work so it’s definitely the last thing we need right now.”
Rev Potter said parishoners had been rallying round to raise money.
The church previously received a £30,000 grant from English Heritage to spend on repairs.
Rev Potter added: “The church and church hall are used by many and various groups in the local community on a regular basis.”
