Figures show rise in unemployment

THE number of young people from Ashfield who have claimed Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA) for longer than a year has risen by 443 per cent compared to last year.

According to figures from the Office of National Statistics, the number of 18 to 24-year-olds claiming JSAfor July was 190 compared to 35 for July last year.

The figures, which were requested by Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero’s office, relate to the constituency rather than the district and come after it was announced that nationally, unemployment had fallen.

She said: “It is worrying that the government appear incapable of getting to grips with youth unemployment in places like ours.”
