Health professionals can now request and access tests, results and highly specific pathology expertise out of hours and at the weekends at King’s Mill Hospital following an extension of the hospital’s pathology hours.
Hospital bosses say the new facility will help speed up patients’ diagnoses and start of treatment.
Previously, only vital and urgent diagnostics were undertaken at these times. The new system ensures appropriate treatment plans for all patients are put into place immediately.
Annette Davis-Green, pathology services manager at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our Trust is driven by the desire to drive up standards of patient care and we are constantly looking for ways to improve our services.
“The pathology department now provides routine working from 7am until 11pm seven days a week, with an on-call service out of these hours.
“This system change is proving very helpful in giving clinicians access to test results when they need them, helping patients get better, sooner.
Testament of its commitment to providing high quality healthcare, the pathology department was given an official mark of quality in 2009 after achieving full accreditation status by Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd (CPA).
