An Edwinstowe’s man commitment to raising cash for the John Eastwood Hospice is unending.
Brian Hawkins has already walked 700 miles collecting an amazing £60,000 for the Mansfield and Ashfield hospice but his dedication continues as he prepares for his seventh hike.
This September, Brian, together with his walking companion and supporter Michael Dickinson, will take on the Leeds to Liverpool walk, a distance of 145 miles estimated to take seven to 10 days.
“My wife and other members of my family and friends have been looked after with such care and dignity at the hospice which acts as my motivation and inspiration to help,” said Brian of Paddock Close. “The staff and volunteers make what is often a terrible situation more bearable for the person in their care while supporting their families.
“I have nothing but admiration for what they do and in a small way I am trying to give back for the fantastic work they have done and continue to do.”
It is a huge undertaking to complete the walk but the biggest challenge is raising the sponsorship each year.
“I send out letters locally and get fantastic support from my friends and contacts who support me each year,” added Brian who covers all the trip expenses himself. “I am amazed each year how much I manage to collect but it’s not easy.”
The Mansfield Road hospice is currently facing extra costs as it needs the roof replacing at an extimated cost of £220,000.
“Brian’s terrific commitment to raising funds is really important to us,” said Trust secretary, Tracey Barker. “We would like to thank everyone who supports this event either personally or by business sponsorship.”
