A diamond couple are celebrating after reaching a matrimonial milestone.

Edward (81) and Annie Fretwell (82), of Slant Lane, Shirebrook, marked their 60th anniversary with a family gathering at The Coopers in Mansfield Woodhouse.

The pair met in the 1950s at the Swan Hotel in Bolsover, and married at Staveley Church in 1956, the hometown of Annie.

Edward was brought up in New Houghton, worked as a miner at Shirebrook and Pleasley.

The happy couple moved into their current home on Slant Lane in 1956. Annie had worked at Lamp Caps Ltd in Chesterfield.

They had two children, Martin and Janice, and now have four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Edward is a huge Mansfield Town fan, while Annie likes to bake and walking, however, they admit that their time is now taken up by their growing family.

Asked about the secret to a successful marriage, Annie said: “Like everyone, we have our ups and downs, but we just get on with it, and we have all our great-grandchildren to keep us busy!”
