Dancing pair celebrate a double win in contest

A SUTTON couple have taken first place at a Strictly Come Dancing-style competition which saw them competing against other.

The Harwood School of Dancing, which is based at the Grosvenor Rooms, recently held its own take on the show, renamed ‘Strickly comes to Sutton’.

Eleven couples took part in the competition, including married pair Alan and Janette Wilson, who competed against each other with different dancing partners.

Each duo, who had practiced their routine over a six month period, danced a ballroom and Latin routine.

Alan, along with dancing partner Karen King, performed a pasodoble (double step) and a waltz.

Janette and her dancing partner Kyle Harwood danced a fast-paced Charleston style quickstep and a traditional Flamenco pasodoble.

The couples were judged by a panel, as well as audience members, and Alan and Karen won the afternoon competition while Janette and Kyle won the evening show with three straight tens.

Janette, who has been married to Alan for 25 years, said: “It wasn’t until our daughters attended dance classes at the dance school that Alan and I decided to try dance lessons ourselves eight years ago.

“We have only ever danced socially and have never competed before, let alone competed against each other.”

She added that the pair were ‘delighted’ with their achievement and that while the competition was difficult, they would do it all over again if they got the chance.
