High winds and bouts of rain have cancelled the popular Glapwell Carnival which was supposed to take place last weekend after a gap of more than 20 years.

Organisers were devastated to cancel the third carnival and scarecrow festival in the village’s history because of bad weather.

A spokesman for The Glapwell Community Development Group, who organise the festival, said: “Unfortunately due to the bad weather report the committee voted to cancel the event for health and safety reasons .

“I am gutted we have to do this but it was made with the best intentions .

“I do apologise for any inconvenience .”

Celebrity stars including Matthew Wolfendon from Emmerdale, and Nicole Marie, from the X-Factor, were booked to make an appearance at the carnival.

Despite the wintery weather marking the end of summer, a few keen residents were out and about embracing the elements.

Scarecrows lined the streets adorning Dennis the Menace outfits and astronaut attire.

The carnival queen was still crowned and scarecrow winners announced but the group hopes to hold the carnival next year.
