Waiting for Video...

Brazen burglars broke into a Mansfield bookmakers and stole a safe full of cash before dumping it in a pub bin just yards away.

The culprits targeted Ladbrokes on Ladybrook Lane between 10pm on Tuesday, 11th February, and 8.10am the next morning.

They gained access through the roof and managed to take off with the heavy safe.

Police were called when staff discovered the break-in as they opened up the next morning.

And while police combed the premises, staff at the adjacent pub, The Westfield, made the discovery in a Biffa industrial bin to the rear of the premises, around 20 yards from the bookmakers.

Bar staff member Leah Gilbert said: “Lauren (Sisson, landlady) had taken some rubbish out to the bin and before she threw it in she looked in and saw the safe in there.

“We knew what it was straight away because the police were across the road and we knew the shop had been broken into.

“It took four people to pick it up and it still had the money in it. It is thought there was about £15,000 in it.

“We don’t know why they put it in the bin, maybe they were going to come back and try to get it later.”

Police are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

They can contact police on 101, quoting incident 165 of 12 February 2014, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
