Derbyshire police have confirmed that enquiries are continuing to trace two men who officers believe were involved in the assault.

The injured man remains in hospital. Both parties in the initial incident are believed to be of Eastern European origin.

Lee Mander, manager of Jepsons DIY in Shirebrook, who witnessed the earlier altercation, said: “The incident started in the afternoon at about 2 o’clock.

“I was outside having a smoke, and I saw two blokes come tumbling out of the betting shop fighting.

“One of the men head butted the other bloke, who ended up with a huge split down his forehead.”

He added that police attended the first incident but did not think that either men were detained at the time.

Derbyshire police declined to confirm whether the injured man was stabbed but are appealed for witnesses to come forward.
