Police believe offenders broke into the farm between 3am and 7am after removing some fencing.

Due to the weight of the sows more than one person would have been needed to move them to the road side.

A litter of about 50 small piglets were also taken.

The field is visible from the A614 and police are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the theft in progress or who have been offered piglets for sale.

Officers are urging anyone who knows or saw anything to get in touch on 101 quoting incident number 000156-13062014.
