Swanwick heroin addict stole power tools to feed habit

A HEROIN addict attempted to steal power tools worth more than £1,370 to pay for his habit.

Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told how Shane Simons (32), of High Street, Swanwick, was seen passing the items over a hardware store fence to another man on 15th December last year.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said: “All the goods were recovered and the defendant made a full admission during police interview.”

Simons’ accomplice managed to escape capture by the police. John Last, in mitigation, said: “He has been wanting to address his drug problems for some months. He says a residential rehabilitation placement is the only way of beating a 20-year addiction.”

Simons admitted theft and committing an offence while subject to a conditional discharge for a previous theft.

District judge Diane Baker gave him a 12-month community order and a nine-month drug rehabilitation requirement.
