Sexual offences and violence reports rise in Nottinghamshire

Reports of sexual offences and violence have rocketed across Nottinghamshire in the last year, according to new figures.

Crime statistics, released by the Office for National Statistics, show that the number of sexual offences reported to police have increased by 67 per cent and reports of violence have gone up by 25 per cent in just the last 12 months.

Deputy Chief Constable Sue Fish said the increase is down to a rise in the number pf complaints made about historical sex allegations.

She said: “The rise is in no small part down to offences having occurred some time ago and an increased confidence victims have in a police investigation.

“This is a welcome development and shows people have faith they will be listened to.”

Violent crime is also a priority focus for Nottinghamshire Police, who are using schemes to try and help people overcome this type of behaviour.

The force, however, have seen a significant drop in the number of robberies and burglaries across the county, according to the figures.

The statistics show that, in the same time period, there were 11 per cent less robberies and eight per cent fewer burglaries.

Dep Chf Cons Fish added: “The fall in burglary and robbery in Nottinghamshire is extremely encouraging and we have worked hard to reduce these types of offences through crime prevention and targeted, intelligence-led, operations which have seen prolific offenders brought to justice.

“Our priority as a force is, and always has been, the victim and especially those who are vulnerable. We will continue to protect those that need us most within our communities.”
