Man jailed for scooter blaze

A MAN who took a scooter and set fire to it has been jailed.

William David Richardson, of Meadow Cottages, Mansfield Woodhouse, appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday when he admitted aggravated vehicle taking from December of last year.

The 23-year-old also pleaded guilty to criminal damage after a council notice board was damaged by the flames from the Piaggio Zip scooter.

He was sentenced to four months imprisonment for aggravated vehicle taking, and one month for criminal damage, to run concurrently.

The court was told that Richardson had taken the bike from a driveway in Mansfield, knowing it belonged to his sister’s partner.

Richardson had claimed that the bike had simply fallen over and burst into flames, but District Judge Diane Baker was told that a fire officer who attended had said it was not possible.

In mitigation, Mark Marriott said his client had taken the scooter as a ‘lark’, to play a trick on the owner.
