Man claimed workmen sold him the wood he stole

An opportunist thief claimed he had paid for the wood he stole from a building site.

Nathan Priest of Birch Street Church Warsop pleaded guilty at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court to stealing wood worth £440 from Bellway Homes at Oyster Way, Warsop.

Priest, 27 loaded the timber onto his van and drove off on May 14.

He told police workmen had offered to sell him the wood and he had picked it up after paying them for it.

The wood was sold on and never recovered.

Priest, who represented himself in court was given a 12 month conditional discharge ordered to pay compensation of £440 with a criminal court charge of £180.
