A drunk man who went on early-morning rampage, kicking wingmirrors off cars in his own street, was been told to pay out more than £500 in compensation.
James Christopher Atherton (31) of Frederick Street, Sutton, appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court where he admitted five counts of criminal damage.
The court was told how residents on his street had been woken by the incident at around 5.45am on 20th July.
One resident told police that he was woken by the sound of males arguing, looked out of the window and saw the defendant, while another spotted him kicking the mirror off a Ford Fiesta.
When interviewed by police, Atherton told them he was drunk and could not remember doing it, but admitted the charges.
Defending, Melanie Hoffman said Atherton had never been in trouble with the police before, said he was genuinely remorseful for his behaviour and wanted to pay compensation to the victims.
She said that he had been at his house with friends and had drunk more than usual because one of his friends had brought round a bottle of spirits.
In the early hours a fight had broken out and as a result, Atherton removed himself from the house and ‘took his anger out on the parked cars on his street’.
Miss Hoffman added: “He takes full responsibility.
“He is genuinely very upset about being before a court.”
Atherton was given a conditional discharge for six months, and told to pay £100 compensation to each of the five car owners.
He agreed to pay £50 a week, and no order was made for costs or a victim surcharge.
