Driver was twice legal limit on motorway

AN Edwinstowe motorist was on the road to redundancy when he drove after drinking more than double the legal limit, Chesterfield magistrates were told last Wednesday.

John Mawby smelled strongly of drink and went on to give a reading of 86mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath, the limit being 35mcgs, when stopped by police on the M1 near South Normanton on 24th May.

Mawby (35), of Thoresby Drive, admitted drink-driving and had committed a similar offence in 2000. He was fined £515, with £85 costs, and received a 17-month road ban.

Julian Hammond, for Mawby, said the offence took place on the anniversary of the death of Mawby’s mother. Mawby intended to stay the night at Twin Oaks motel near Junction 29 but he took the wheel after finding that his wife had fallen ill.
