Dog’s leg amputated after drunken attack

Adrian Jones of Stanton Hill, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to his Lhaso Apso poodle, Toby by throwing him in an excessively rough manner resulting in the fracturing of his right foreleg.

Prosecuting for the RSPCA, at Mansfield Magistrates Court on Thursday, David Payne said a neighbour of Jones had heard the dog screaming in pain on October 10. He had gone next door to investigate, and found Jones holding the dog.

The police and RSPCA were eventually called and Jones was interviewed under caution. Jones told police he had picked Toby up and “chucked him in bed”. He said he had come home drunk to find the dog had urinated on the floor. He had been a bit rough but had not meant to hurt him.

When the dog was taken to a local vets it was X-rayed and found to have displaced fractures which must have been the result of severe force to the bones. An operation proved unsuccessful and after 14 days in veterinary hospital the dog’s leg was amputated. The court heard the animal had been found another home.

Defending, Michael Little said Jones had been under the influence of alcohol. He had attended a family funeral the day before the incident and had been upset. He deeply regretted the incident. The case was adjourned for reports.
