Two unemployed young men who tried to steal £20 worth of paving slabs for a garden were handed conditional discharges.
James Lancashire, 23, of Abbey Road, Kirkby, and Kyle Riley, 19, of Clare Road, Sutton, both admitted taking the slabs from a building site belonging to Paul Smith PLC in Kirkby.
Defending themselves, Lancashire said he thought the storehouse from which he took the slabs was abandoned and were going to waste.
Riley said it was Lancashire’s idea and that they were for Lancashire’s garden, and not to be sold like the crown prosection service suggested.
Both were told to pay £165 in costs, to be deducted from their benefits.
