Every household and business has a ‘duty of care’ to ensure that any waste they dispose of is done so lawfully.
If you use a contractor to dispose of your waste, make sure they hold a waste carrier licence and ask for a receipt when your waste is collected.
Failure to comply with the duty of care can result in a fine of up to £50,000 and 12 months imprisonment. Any vehicle found to be used in the illegal dumping of waste can be seized and crushed.
For more information on the householder duty of care please contact Mansfield District Council on 01623 463 463 or to check whether a waste carrier is licensed, please contact the Environment Agency on 03708 506 506 or www.environment-agency.gov.uk
Coun Mick Barton Portfolio Holder for Public Protection said: “We take flytipping and duty of care offences very seriously and will always look to prosecute those responsible. Dumped rubbish is illegal, dangerous and ruins the appearance of our District. It is unfair that residents should have to pay for it to be removed so anyone with information on this incident should contact us as soon as possible.”
If you see any rubbish that has been dumped illegally, please report it via our Grimebusters hotline on 01623 463463 or email email@example.com
