Councillor leaves UKIP to join Labour

MANSFIELD district councillor Nick Bennett has decided to leave the UK Independence Party (UKIP) just months after joining, Chad can reveal.

The former Conservative councillor announced last October he was joining UKIP, along with the chairman of Mansfield Conservative Association at the time, Philip Smith.

But Coun Bennett has now decided to join the Labour Party after saying he felt UKIP was 'obsessed' with issues around Europe.

He said: "My beliefs on Europe have been well-known. That is why I went to UKIP but they are obsessed with the Europe issue.

"That is not of benefit to local people."

A statement from UKIP Parliamentary candidate for Mansfield, David Hamilton, says: "It is always sad to lose a member of the party, particularly for personal reasons, and we understand that he now wants to take a back seat."
