Ashfield college is on track to be the first in the area to forge links with a businesses connection scheme which could transform the employment prospects for students

Business Connector Programme ambassador Mark Bridges is looking for 10 local businesses to volunteer some of their time to support students under the scheme.

Business Connectors are talented individuals seconded from business, trained by Business in the Community and placed in communities of greatest need to build partnerships that tackle local issues.

Mark, 40 has been seconded from Lloyds to take part in the project in Mansfield and Ashfield and North Nottingham over the next 12 months.

He said: “I am working with Ashfield College over the weeks ahead to involve businesses in the area, particularly people who have built their careers following studies at West Notts College. It is a great way for local people to give back to their community.”

The project asks businesses to second employees for a period of four to 12 months, to visit schools and organisations to talk to young people aged 16-19 and give them the benefit of their experience in the world of work. The programme is aimed at a wide range of young people, from those not in education, employment or training (NEETs) to people on vocational and academic courses.

Mark Bridges added: “It could be about telling kids what to do and what not to do in an interview situation and what it is like working in the real world, to increase their chance of getting a job and the life skills they need to gain employment.

“It could be telling them how they got where they are today, perhaps through studying the particular course they are on. The project has already involved four businesses, with more showing an interest. SF Media of Ramson Wood, Mansfield are already on board with two people who studied at West Notts College as young adults themselves. They now run a web design and marketing company (www.sf-media.co.uk) and are keen to pass on their experience and knowledge.”

Pete Benyon, co-ordinator for learner support at West Nottinghamshire College’s Ashfield project said: “We’re really enjoying working with Mark at Business Connect and are looking forward to all the opportunities his project will create for our students.” Contact Mark on 07919396052, email: mark.bridges@bitcconnect.org
