Mansfield Library is remembering the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War with talks and exhibitions.

Mansfield in the Great War is a Nottinghamshire County Council exhibition taking place at Mansfield Library, West Gate, from 1st -31st August, during library opening hours.

Pictures from the library’s collection showing Mansfield and Clipstone Camp 1914 – 1918 will be on display in the Gallery area, along with illustrations from the Clipstone Camp magazine Pow-Wow, and images of the town during the War.

The glass cabinets in the Local Studies area will also display remarkable artefacts, medals and memorabilia that belonged to Mansfield soldiers who served in the trenches. Many artefacts have been loaned to the exhibition by local people.

Coun John Knight, Committee Chairman for Culture, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Every family in the country was affected by World War One, and this is why the Great War commemorations are so important.

“We greatly value the contribution local people have made to share their family’s personal stories of courage and bravery during the war years.

“These contributions from local people to loan artefacts to the libraries as part of our Great War exhibitions enable us to promote these powerful stories within our communities.”

Events at Mansfield, Worksop and West Bridgford Libraries are also part of the Trent to Trenches programme commemorating 100 years since the start of The Great War.

Trent to Trenches is a countywide programme of events and activities developed by hundreds of organisations and volunteers in partnership with Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Experience Nottinghamshire to commemorate 100 years since the start of The Great War.
