Council leader steps down

THE leader of Newark & Sherwood District Council has announced he is standing down from his position as the authority embarks on a new civic year.

Long-serving councillor Tony Roberts informed members that he did not intend to seek re-election as either leader for the Conservative Group or council leader for the forthcoming term.

Coun Roberts, who has been Conservative Group leader for more than 11 years and council leader for nearly nine years, said: “I pledged to the council a year ago that I would not assume the right to be leader for the life of the council, and that I would resign and seek re-election each year.”

Coun Roberts will continue as a councillor and has accepted a role as deputy leader of the Conservative Group.
