The gritters at Nottinghamshire County Council have shipped in 12,000 tonnes of grit in preparation for icy roads in the coming winter months.

This week the county’s gritting teams will be going on low-risk standby as temperatures begin to drop. Full 24/7 standby will come into force on 1st November.

Coun Kevin Greaves, chairman of the transport and highways committee, said: “Our planning for winter carries on all year round and we are confident that we are in a stronger position than ever to deal with whatever winter throws at us.

“Our salt barns are already full and we will be ready to swing into action as soon as any bad weather arrives.”

The County Council said it gives high priority to winter maintenance.
