Council food bank appeal is a success

Council chiefs say the response to an appeal by Mansfield District Council for food bank donations has been overwhelming.

Non-perishable items such as soup, beans and dried food including pasta, were distributed on Christmas Eve to vulnerable people living in sheltered or supported housing complexes, Mansfield Baptist Church homeless shelter, those in temporary accommodation and to vulnerable people who use the council’s tenancy support and homelessness services.

Mansfield District Council staff were among those who donated toiletries and clothes including coats, socks and shoes, as well as food for the homeless.

So many donations were made that some items are still being distributed to support vulnerable people.

Coun Mick Colley, portfolio holder for tenancy services and housing needs, said: “The response to the appeal was huge and the people of Mansfield were incredibly generous in their donations.

“Thankyou to everyone who made a donation – it really did make a difference. Those that received the parcels were very grateful and some were in tears because they were not expecting it.”
