At Wednesday week’s meeting at Anchor Centre, Skegby, Jane Mallett, of Age Concern, gave a talk about benefits. Members also went to Holidays At Home event to listen to singing group Take Note.
Andrew Tucker gave a talk about the history of Mansfield Palace Theatre at November’s meeting at St John’s Church.
Angj Brooks led a news session at Thursday week’s meeting. Gemma Trueman organised making masks and Liz Guy was also leader.
St Mary’s Church
The Vicar, the Rev David James, presided at Sunday week’s Eucharists. Maureen Peat assisted at the later service and members of Ashfield Voluntary Services, partners with St Mary’s in a Food Bank Project, spoke about what that involves. Junior church members and leaders met at Magdalene Centre.
Community of Christ
Last Tuesday week members of Peacemakers Youth and the women’s groups prepared for a Christmas Fayre. Janice Fox provided refreshments. Nearly new goods were on sale at Wednesday’s week’s coffee morning and Performing Art Workshop was in the evening. Members met with Derbyshire’s Clay Cross congregation on Thursday week for a presentation about world church issues. Saturday week’s Christmas fair raised more than £1,000 for church funds from stalls, face painting and buffet lunches. Testify To The Truth, was the theme for Sunday week’s worship. Barrie and Janice Fox were ministers and Ralph Holmes was organist. Hazel Holmes welcomed the congregation and received the offering. Gifts of food for Food Bank were collected during the service by Barbara Woodhouse. Refreshments were provided by Brenda Waring and Marianne Rowe.
Mr Mark Renshaw led Sunday week’s service and spoke about his visit to Romania. Mrs Gill Brunt was reader and door steward. Family church members took the offertory and their class was led by Mrs Rachel Ross. Flowers in memory of Mr J. Leverton were arranged by Mrs Ellen Hartshorne. There was a recent coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support. Tracey Cranfield led 1st Brownies’ meeting. At meetings of Ashfield Dragons Kick Boxing Club instructors were David Parnell, Mally Wainwright and Alan Batterham.
At Under Fives’ Playgroup activities about Julia Donaldson’s book, The Gruffalo, included watching a DVD, making a storybook and painting. Ladybird certificates for good behaviour went to Bailey Denman, Jackson Lowe and Gracey Fordon. Other activities included alphabet games and animal-theme and numeracy activities. Fourth birthday greetings were given to Ffion Halfpenny.
Janet Sawyer and Sylvia Linnell served meals at Wednesday week’s lunch club meeting. Cynthia Densham, Marian Beardsley, Maj Marjorie Astill and Peggy Gibson ran Friday week’s coffee morning. On Saturday week the band played Christmas music at Idlewells Precinct. Maj Dawn Disney led Sunday week’s morning meeting and Maj Peter Disney, the evening meeting. On Monday week Maj Dawn Disney and Jean Spooner ran the parents’ and toddlers’ meeting.
At Monday week’s meeting members made ‘sock pigs’, did brain teasers and played games. Leaders were Liz Belshaw, Trish Baines and Nikki Walton.
Members made potato prints to their own designs at Wednesday week’s meeting. Leaders were Jane Johnson, Claire Leivers, Katie Cudworth, Milly Coope, Emily Johnson and Jan Wells.

Zion Baptist Church: Sunday week’s worship was led by Helen Tomlinson and the worship team. Blair Hutchison and Zak Billson-West were in charge of sound and lighting mixing systems.Speaker the Rev Charles Claydon read Psalm 146, Verses One and Two, and the theme was Gifts of the Holy Spirit. At Eastside Centre on Monday week SureStart had a session and WNC (West Nottinghamshire College), a course. Last Tuesday week there was an Early Start meeting and on Wednesday week, a WNC course and an Activity Club meeting. There were meetings of Kerry’s Can Can and junior and senior youth clubs on Thursday week. SureStart had a session on Friday week.

St John’s Church
Olive Branch Coffee Bar was open on Friday week and Saturday week. There was a Boys’ Brigade meeting on the Friday. Mr Philip Slater conducted Sunday week’s morning service. Mr Bob Dawson read lessons and Mrs Sue Otter operated the clavinova. Mrs Kelly Cater led the evening service and Mrs Doreen Young played the clavinova. Mr Jeff Moakes and steward Miss Jill Moakes read lessons and other steward was Mrs Irene Bestwick. There were meetings of Ashfield Childminders’ Group, Girls’ Brigade and Sutton Choral Society. At Monday Christian Group’s meeting members made Christmas cards. There was a carers’ and toddlers’ meeting and a zumba class yesterday week. At the community room there was an art class last Wednesday. Mr John Whitehead led November’s praise and prayer meeting. Speaker was chairman of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire District, the Rev Loraine Mellor. Soloist was Mr Moakes and accompanist was Mrs Jan Dawes.
New Cross Church
Holy Communion was celebrated on Wednesday week. Hilary Bostock led a Pins and Needles Group meeting. June Bagley led Friday week’s MINGLE Group meeting. Jane Selby led the children’s glee dance club. On Saturday week there was a Christmas fair and an open day. The Rev Adrian Butt celebrated Sunday week’s Holy Communion and youth team members arranged 11 Alive service. Greeters were Peter and Susanne Brunt and steward was Jayne Self. Bernard Brown read lessons, with Joyce Handford, and took the offertory, with the Rev Frank Crowther. Evelyn Mott and Carol Frear served refreshments. On Monday week Norma Mitchell and Julie Cotterill organised a toddlers’ group meeting. Jane Selby led a drama group meeting. Yesterday week there was a community choir practice.
