Community of Christ
Last Tuesday week members of Peacemakers Youth Group made Christmas cards arranged by Helen Kemp. Helpers were Barbara Woodhouse, Marianne Rowe and Celia Roddis. Guest minister Andrew Fox arranged scripture-based activities at the women’s meeting. Mary Walters led worship and Hazel Holmes provided refreshments. At Wednesday week’s coffee morning nearly goods were on sale. There was a Performing Art Workshop in the evening. Love the Lord, was the theme for Sunday week’s worship led by Stewart Woodhouse who served communion. Celia Roddis gave a talk and Ralph Holmes was organist. Refreshments were served by Brian and Celia Roddis.
Zion Baptist Church
Sunday week’s worship was led by Helen Tomlinson and the worship team. A talk was given about street pastors in Mansfield. Blair Hutchison was in charge of sound and lighting mixing systems. The Rev Charles Claydon read Psalm 23 and Habakkuk, Chapter Three, Verses 17 – 18. Speaker Josh Turner’s theme was based on the First Epistle to Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 58. At Eastside Centre last Monday week there was a SureStart session and a WNC (West Nottinghamshire College) course. Last Tuesday week there was an Early Start meeting and on Wednesday week, a WNC course and an Activity Club meeting. There were meetings of Kerry’s Can Can Club and junior and senior youth clubs on Thursday week. SureStart had a session on Friday week.
At Wednesday week’s meeting members prepared for a Promise evening and practiced a presentation about the history of Brownies. Invitations were written to family members and friends. Leaders were Liz Guy, Gemma Trueman and Angj Brooks.
St Luke’s Church
Maureen Peat led and preached at November’s morning worship at Willetts Court.
St Mary’s Church
The Vicar, the Rev David James, presided and preached at Sunday week’s Eucharists. Sheila Oscroft assisted at the later service and Barbara Minett led intercessions. During the service the vicar baptised Emma May and Callum Paul Baker. Junior church members and leaders met at Magdalene Centre.
St John’s Church
Olive Branch Coffee Bar was open on Friday week and Saturday week. There was a Boys’ Brigade meeting on the Friday. Mrs Sue Stamenkovic led Sunday week’s morning service. Mrs Sue Otter operated the clavinova. Steward for the day Miss Lesley Moakes and Mrs Carole Southall read lessons. Mrs Jo Makin led the evening service. Mrs Doreen Young played the clavinova and Mrs Mary Aldous and steward for the day Miss Jill Moakes read lessons. Other steward for the day was Mrs Ann Cope. On Monday week there were meetings of Ashfield Childminders’ Group, Monday Christian Group. Girls’ Brigade and Sutton Choral Society. Yesterday week there was a carers’ and toddlers’ meeting and a zumba class. At the community room there was a Scrabble Group meeting on the Tuesday and a CAMEO Group meeting, last Wednesday.
Mr David Purseglove led Sunday week’s service. Organist was Mr Jack Stone and vestry steward was Miss Eileen Jackson. Mrs Arlene Bradbury was door steward and reader. Mr Bill Gibson and Rosie Stone took the offertory. Mrs Ellen Hartshorne arranged flowers, in memory of Mr Laurie Wain, and served refreshments with Mrs Janet Fairfield. The recent bread and cheese lunch raised £131 for Christian Aid. At meetings of Ashfield Dragons Kick Boxing Club instructors were David Parnell, Mally Wainwright and Alan Batterham. Tracey Cranfield led 1st Brownies’ meeting.
Janet Sawyer led Wednesday week’s over 60s meeting and, with Maj Peter Disney and Sylvia Linnell, served meals at the lunch club meeting. Maj Dawn Disney led Sunday week’s morning meeting and Maj Peter Disney, the evening meeting. Jean Spooner organised Monday week’s parents’ and toddlers’ meeting.
At yesterday week’s meeting beetle drive winners were Doreen Lewis and Beryl Nichol. Members played bingo after lunch. Game winners were May Godber, Grace Wall, Ruth Smalley, Joan Ellis and Joyce Gregory. A birthday card from the club was given to Doreen Lewis.
New Cross Church
Holy Communion was celebrated on Wednesday week. Hilary Bostock led a Pins and Needles Group meeting then and Thursday week’s card making group meeting. June Bagley led Friday week’s MINGLE Group meeting. There was a men’s breakfast on Saturday week. The Rev Michael Dobbs celebrated Sunday week’s Holy Communion. Steve Cotterill led Morning Prayer and youth team members arranged 11 Alive service. Greeters were Adrian and Jayne Self and steward was Bernard Brown. The Rev Frank Crowther read lessons, with Joyce Handford, and took the offertory, with Anne Acton. Eunice Wright and Derek Smith served refreshments. On Monday week Norman Mitchell and Julie Cotterill led a toddlers’ group meeting. Jane Selby led a drama group meeting. There was a community choir practice yesterday week.
At Under Fives’ Playgroup children learned songs about fireworks and the Divali Festival. They discussed firework safety, made pictures of fireworks and had hot dogs at a bonfire party, for which they made a model bonfire. They made chocolate apples and used coloured rice to make raneoli patterns. For Remembrance Day they painted poppy pictures and had a two-minutes’ silence. Ladybird certificates for good behaviour went to Ffion Halfpenny, Luke Cheetham, Jacob Tilstone and Leo Shay-Lee. Taylor Harvey’s fourth birthday was celebrated.
