Floral Art Club
Chairman Doreen Marriott welcomed members and visitors to September’s meeting at Ashfield Play Forum. Di Singleton, of Derby, gave a demonstration called Summer Into Autumn. Doreen Jones thanked her and the arrangements were raffled.
St Modwen’s Ladies’
At Wednesday week’s meeting at Magdalene Centre cakes were provided by Jill Heathfield, to celebrate her golden wedding, and Barbara Lewis, to celebrate her birthday. Jill Heathfield was raffle winner and Janet Tutin and Barbara Lewis served coffee.
Recently members of the group met to discuss the future direction of the practice. It was agreed to invite patients to express their views about what services they require from the practice at a meeting at the surgery on Wednesday, 3rd October, at 2pm.
Sutton Centre U5s
Activities on a theme All About Me, included using hands and feet, doing a display about emotions and making family-theme drawings. Children made a graph about their favourite fruits. Other activities included ball skills, riding bikes, experiments, using a lending library and a puppet show. Children played instruments to find out the sounds they made. Ladybird certificates for good behaviour went to Max Spence and Amelia Adams. Bailey Denman’s birthday was celebrated.
New members Jessica Madeley and Chloe Bower were welcomed to Thursday week’s meeting. Leader Gemma Trueman’s birthday and recent wedding were celebrated with refreshments and looking at wedding photographs. The evening finished with a game. Other leaders were Liz Guy and Angj Brooks.
Fourth Guides: Games at Monday week’s meeting were supervised by Liz Belshaw, Trish Baines and Nikki Walton.
For a book-theme meeting yesterday week members wore costumes depicting characters from favourite books. Passages from books were read to them and cards about their favourite books were made. Leaders Catherine Graves and Tina Duncalf were helped by Young Leaders and Guides.
Zion Baptist Church: Sunday week’s worship was led by Helen Tomlinson and the worship team. Speaker Les Barnard’s theme was Revival. Blair Hutchison was in charge of sound and lighting mixing systems. Psalm 100 was read by Helen Tomlinson. Testimonies were given by Paulette West, Kath Kellett, Jane Gull and Mike Sellars. Xtreme Sunday school was led by Kerry Ellis and Lucy Chalk. There was a home group meeting on Wednesday week.
Community of Christ
Last Tuesday week Peacemakers’ Youth Group had a craft session arranged by Barbara Woodhouse. At the women’s group’s harvest service in the evening speaker was Sharon Craddock. Refreshments were served by Janice Fox. At Wednesday week’s coffee morning nearly new goods were on sale. There was a Performing Art Workshop in the evening. Sunday week’s family service was led by Richard and Elaine Chapman, of Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Ralph Holmes was organist and Casper Holmes took the offering. Members had a pot luck lunch afterwards.
St John’s Methodist
The Minister, the Rev Alan Boyd, conducted the funeral of Mrs Joyce Harris on Friday week. The Rev David Wheatley gave a tribute, Mr John Whitehead read a lesson and Mrs Doreen Young played the clavinova. There was a Boys’ Brigade meeting in the evening. Olive Branch Coffee Bar was open on the Friday and on Saturday week. Mrs Marjorie Henshaw conducted Sunday week’s morning service. Mrs Mary Aldous and Mrs Carole Southall read lessons and Mrs Elaine Guy played the clavinova. The minister led the evening service and celebrated Holy Communion. Mrs Young played the clavinova. Stewards for the day were Mr and Mrs G. Bestwick. On Monday week there was a meeting of Ashfield Childminders’ Group. The minister conducted the funeral of Mrs Flo Hewitt. Mrs Aldous read a lesson and Mrs Young played the clavinova. Mrs Sheila Clarke was speaker at Monday Christian Group’s meeting. In the evening there were meetings of Girls’ Brigade and Sutton Choral Society. Yesterday week there were a carers’ and toddlers’ meeting and a zumba class. Last Wednesday there was an art class at the community room. The minister chaired a finance and property meeting.
New Cross Church
The Vicar, the Rev Tim Mitchell, celebrated Wednesday week’s and Sunday week’s Holy Communions. On the Wednesday there was a Mothers’ Union meeting and Hilary Bostock led Pins and Needles Group’s meeting. A course called Life Is For Living started on two days during the week. Hilary Bostock led Thursday week’s card making group meeting. June Bagley led Friday week’s MINGLE group meeting. Jane Selby ran a children’s Glee Club meeting. Saturday week’s coffee morning was for The Children’s Society. Mrs Alison Wood led Sunday week’s morning worship and youth team members arranged 11 Alive service. Greeters were John and Anthea Calladine and steward was Jayne Self. The Rev Frank Crowther and Adrian Toon read lessons and Derek Smith and Bernard Brown took the offertory. Barbara Harrison and Derek Smith served refreshments. On Monday week Norma Mitchell and Julie Cotterill led a toddlers’ group meeting and there was a Mothers’ Union planning meeting. The vicar took communion to a resident of Morley Street. Jane Selby led a drama group meeting. Yesterday week there was a community choir practice.
St Luke’s Church
The Rev Adrian Butt presided and preached assisted by Maureen Peat at September’s Eucharist at Willetts Court.
St Mary’s Church: The Vicar, the Rev David James, presided and preached at Sunday week’s early said Eucharist. Matins was led by Tim Guy and Gill James preached and led intercessions. Worship4All service for young families was led by the all-age-team.
United Reformed Church: The Rev Maureen Buxton conducted Sunday week’s service and celebrated communion. Organist was Mrs Helena Wain. Mrs Janet Fairfield was door steward and reader and Mrs Crystal Gibson was vestry steward. Mrs Ellen Hartshorne arranged flowers provided by Mrs Ruth Crook. Mrs Rachel Ross took the offertory and led family church. Mrs Elspeth Clunie and Mr Ivan Smith were communion stewards. Saturday week’s coffee morning raised £296 for church funds. It was run by Bill and Crystal Gibson, Alan, Janet and David Fairfield, Elspeth and Jim Clunie, Kathy Dunning and Helena Wain. On Monday week Mr and Mrs Gibson and Mr and Mrs Fairfield ran a market stall that raised £160.
Major Peter Disney led Wednesday week’s over 60s meeting and with Sylvia Linnell served meals at the lunch club meeting. Sunday week’s morning meeting was led by Maj Peter Disney and the evening meeting, by Maj Dawn Disney. Jean Spooner and Maj Dawn Disney led Monday week’s parents’ and toddlers’ meeting.
Aspley Court Centre
At yesterday week’s meeting a harvest festival service was led by Kathleen Bramwell and Denise Matters. Produce was given to members. After lunch members played bingo. Game winners were Brenda Rudhall, Edna Smith and Nelly Bramley.
Mr M. Wood and Mrs J. Connah were bingo callers recently. Game winners were Mesdames P. Dykes, J. Mansfield, J. Wood, E. McKee, C. Stevenson, M. Johnson, E. Hill, M. Rolley, D. Mitchell, M. Pitchford, J. Gregory, D. Goddard, Connah, V. Morrison, W. Harris, E. Pickering and B. Toon and Messrs D. Johnson, H. Straw, H. Mitchell, A. Saysert, Wood and A. Morrison. Raffle winners were Mesdames McKee, J. Swain, Goddard and Stevenson, Mr Johnson and Mr Saysert. Members had an outing to Skegness last Tuesday week.
