Townswomen’s Guild
Chairman Sheila Galert welcomed 41 members to August’s social afternoon at St John’s Methodist Church. Vice-chairman Sandra Prewett read minutes. Lisa Faulkner, of Ashfield Homes Lifeline, spoke about help available to older people. Members had bingo and a quiz. Raffle winners were Margaret Wardle, Pauline Beastall, Barbara Gilbert and Pam Bowler. Elsie Marsh and Dorothy Sparham served refreshments.
St Mary’s Church
The Vicar, the Rev David James, presided and preached at Sunday week’s Eucharists. Tim Guy assisted and Kay Coope led intercessions at sung Eucharist. Junior church members and leaders met at Magdalene Centre.
Community of Christ
At Wednesday week’s coffee and chat morning nearly new goods were on sale. Stand Firm, was the theme for Sunday week’s service arranged by Hazel Holmes. Members of the congregation gave readings and announced hymns and Ralph Holmes was organist. Stewart Woodhouse welcomed the congregation and received the offering. Refreshments afterwards were provided by Barbara and Stewart Woodhouse.
United Church
A student, of Westminster College, Cambridge, Henriette Wentick, led Sunday week’s service. Mr Jack Stones was organist and Miss Eileen Jackson was vestry steward. Door steward Mrs Arlene Bradbury also gave a reading. Jessica Ross, Lauren and Abbey Ellis and Daniella Budd took the offertory. Mrs Ellen Hartshorne arranged flowers provided by Mr and Mrs R. Morrison, of Scotland. Mrs Rachel Ross led family church. At meetings of Ashfield Dragons Kick Boxing Club instructors were David Parnell, Mally Wainwright and Alan Batterham.
Salvation Army
Major Peter Disney conducted Sunday week’s morning service. Jacob and Rachel Bell were dedicated. Maj Dawn Disney led the evening service.
Zion Baptist Church
At Sunday week’s service CDs were used to lead worship and Blair Hutchison was in charge of sound and lighting mixing systems. Speaker was Alan Lowe. Michelle Hutchison served refreshments afterwards. The church’s website is www.zionbaptistchurch.co.uk
New Cross Church
There was Holy Communion on Wednesday week. June Bagley led MINGLE Group’s meeting on Friday week. Mrs Maureen Peat, of St Mary Magdalene’s Church, led Sunday week’s morning service. Youth team members arranged 11 Alive service. Greeters were Peter and Susanne Brunt. Readers were Bernard Brown and Joyce Handford. Steward Anne Acton and Derek Smith took the offertory. Carol Frear and Evelyn Mott served refreshments. There was a community choir practice yesterday week.
Brierley House
Bingo callers were Mr M. Wood, Mrs E. McKee and Mrs J. Connah. Game winners were Mesdames M. Pitchford, E. Moore, J. Mansfield, P. Dykes, J. Gregory, J. Townsend, B. Rudhall, J. Swain, Connah, J. Wood, D. Goddard, E. Hill, D. Mitchell, W. Harris, J. Spiby and E. Pickering and Messrs A. Saysert, Wood and A. Morrison. Raffle winners were Mesdames Wood, J. Channer, V. Morrison and M. Barsby, Mr Wood and Mr Morrison.
Aspley Court Centre
At yesterday week’s meeting domino winners were Margaret Cole, Joanna crump, Brenda Rudhall and Dorothy Jones. Members played bingo after lunch. Game winners were Beryl Thompson, Mary Armstrong, Dorothy Papworth and Brenda Rudhall.
St John’s Church
Olive Branch coffee bar was open on Friday week and Saturday week. Ms Kelly Cater led Sunday week’s morning service. Mrs Elaine Guy played the clavinova and Mr Alan Adkin and Miss Brenda Marshall read lessons. Mr Edmund Hewitt led the evening service and Mrs Sue Otter operated the clavinova. Stewards for the day were Miss Lesley Moakes, Miss Jill Moakes and Mrs Ann Cope. There was a zumba class yesterday week.
