A shoplifter was fined after he was caught stealing food from a supermarket.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court were told how James Phillips (53) was seen by staff at a Nisa store in South Normanton stealing tomatoes and he was also found to have stolen cheese and previously yoghurt.
Becky Mahon, prosecuting, said Phillips was stopped by staff after picking up tomatoes, and cheese was also recovered and he had also stolen yoghurt on the previous day.
Phillips, of Common Road, Huthwaite, Sutton, admitted theft of tomatoes and cheese, committed on 30th May, and theft of yoghurt, committed on 29th May.
He also admitted to possessing a bladed instrument in public.
Matt Evans, defending, said Phillips had depression and had been using a knife for gardening. Phillips was fined £110, orderedto pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
