MANOR Academy student Jessica Wells has been installed as the youth mayor for Mansfield alongside Lucy Fretwell, the new youth Ambassador.
Jessica and Lucy, both 16, signed their pledge at the Civic Centre with Mansfield District Council’s managing director Ruth Marlow.
They will take joint responsibility in representing young people and taking their voice to mayor Tony Egginton.
The duo will act as ambassadors for Mansfield and be role models for their peers across the district.
This is the fifth year that Mansfield will have a youth mayor and Jessica and Lucy will replace the previous duo of youth mayor Daniel Winfield and his deputy Dawn Meade.
Jessica’s objectives are clear as she is focussed on increasing work experience opportunities for young people aged 14-18.
She also hopes to boost employment prosperity by working alongside businesses to channel their qualifications into real-life situations.
The new youth mayor said: “I decided to run for youth mayor because there are things I’d like to change to benefit my generation.
“I will work very hard to succeed in every challenge put in my path and to try to get as much done as possible in the short time I have.”
Lucy, from Samworth Church Academy, said: “I am here to support Jessica in any way that I can and as a post-16 student I feel I have both the personal experience and views to help with the youth mayor’s manifesto.”
Mayor Tony Egginton said: “We are delighted that in Jessica and Lucy we have two students who are enthusiastic and determined to help make a difference to the young people of the Mansfield District and have much to bring to their roles. I look forward to working with them over the coming year.”
