HELP make Christmas a special time for Ashfield’s youngsters - that is our message to Chad’s kind-hearted readers.
We need you to donate small presents for struggling families across the district as part of the Ashfield Chad’s first ever Christmas Charity Appeal.
The appeal is for the Ashfield branch of the national charity Home Start which provides practical support to vulnerable youngsters and their families.
Home Start Ashfield, which is based at Percival Crescent in Sutton, helps families deal with a host of issues including isolation, domestic abuse, being new to the area, disability, post-natal illness or difficulty looking after several children.
The charity provides a network of support, offers practical advice on day-to-day matters and helps families to enjoy life with their young children.
So in the coming weeks, we will be asking you to donate Christmas presents to the children who use Home Start. It does not have to be an expensive gift; it might be a selection box, a book, a small toy, some crayons or a colouring book -whatever you donate will be greatly appreciated by all the youngsters.
Many of the families who use Home Start have very young children or babies so you can make Christmas extra special for them by donating something as simple as a rattle.
Yesterday, chairman of Home Start Elaine Bonam described the importance of the Christmas Appeal and the charity’s role in the Ashfield community.
She said: “Home Start supports families who for a range of reasons are finding it difficult at this time. The presents provided at Christmas help to raise the spirits of parents, re-enforcing the fact that they are not alone.
“The current economic climate makes this support even more important as the increasing unemployment adds more mental and financial strain on those already struggling to cope.”
Once you have bought your gift, please bring it to any of the Chad’s offices, which are on Outram Street at Sutton, Market Place at Mansfield and Newgate Lane in Mansfield. You do not need to wrap your present because we will do that for you - but anything you donate must be brand new and suitable for a child under five-years-old (under three if buying for a baby or toddler).
Staff at Sutton Asda have kindly pledged to provide festive wrapping paper for all the presents you donate to our appeal.
Once the presents have been collected, Chad staff members will hand them out at Home Start’s Christmas party which will be held on 9th December at Kirkby’s Festival Hall.
