Sherwood MP goes to the coalface

Member of Parliament for Sherwood, Mark Spencer, donned his hard hat for a visit to Thoresby Colliery to meet with the pit manager Derek Main to experience life at the coalface. Travelling over six kilometres underground, from Edwinstowe to Perlethorpe on foot and by train, Mark saw at first hand the work being done under Sherwood.

Mark said “It has been brilliant and I am so grateful to Derek and the team at Thoresby. It was really valuable to see for myself what hard work is going on right under our feet and if I’m honest, my inner child was definitely channelling Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom!

“On a more serious note, it was really valuable to be able to chat with the experts about the pivotal role coal has to play in our energy future – we have hundreds of years’ worth in the UK and I will continue to encourage the Government to drive the Clean Coal agenda forward.

“I firmly believe that if we are to keep the lights on and tackle energy price rises, we must be realistic about the capacity of wind and solar, resist the temptation to depend of foreign imports
