Jarrow marchers to visit town

A GROUP of young people will be walking through Mansfield on Friday as they attempt to recreate the famous Jarrow March.

Aiming to raise awareness of high unemployment and poverty, the marchers will head through the town before a rally in the Market Place.

They will be following in the footsteps of the original Jarrow marchers, who travelled from the north east to London in 1936 to protest about similar issues during the Great Depression.

The march headed to Parliament with a petition calling for more jobs.

On Friday, the marchers will be heading down Chesterfield Road ahead of a short rally with speakers in the Market Place at 2.35pm.

Before this, they will also visit Bolsover at around 11am and Shirebrook at 12.15am.
